We’ve long been waiting for a new, facelifted Tesla Model Y (“Model Y Juniper”) to launch following the launch of the new, facelifted Tesla Model 3 (“Model 3 Highland”). After all, they are mostly the same vehicle — the Model Y being just a bit taller and longer. Initially, about three-quarters of the Model 3 and Model Y were the same. Of course, Tesla couldn’t announce when the new Model Y would be produced, since that could diminish sales of the existing Model Y, and Tesla at times tried to throw people of the scent.

For a long time, I’ve expected the new Model Y would go into production by the end of this year. It looks like I wasn’t far off, as reporting is out that the new Model Y will go into production in January at Tesla’s Shanghai factory (which is also where the refreshed Model 3 first launched). The refreshed Model 3 started getting produced in Shanghai in September 2023 and deliveries began in October 2023.

Shanghai media outlet LatePost provides us with the news. The outlet adds that a 6-seat version of the Model Y will begin in the 4th quarter of 2025.

Deliveries of the original Model Y began in China in January 2021.

For a closer look on what to expect in the refreshed Model Y compared to the existing one, well, just watch our review of the Tesla Model 3 Highland and our comparison of it to my 2019 Tesla Model 3.
