While electric vehicles are doing quite well in luxury car segments, many of our readers (and writers) have lamented that we don’t have enough affordable electric cars, and no really affordable electric cars. Honda may be looking to change that.

It may be arriving to the EV party a decade late, but reports are that Honda is looking to arrive with a bang. Japanese outlet Nikkei says that Honda plans to launch a small EV that costs less than $30,000 in the US next year.

To avoid tariffs, of course, the smallest model in the Honda 0 series would be built in the US. It is expected to come to market as early as 2026.

Tesla just pointed out that cost of materials for EVs has come down significantly in recent quarters. Presumably, this is a trend Honda is seeing as well and the Japanese automaker feels confident it can capitalize on that by busting open a new segment on the bottom of the market.

At the Ohio factory where the new EV would seemingly be built, Honda already produces the Acura RSX and will produce the Afeela 1 as part of its joint venture with Sony Honda Mobility.

“To prepare for mass EV production in the U.S., Honda is retooling three of its existing plants and creating a $3.5 billion battery plant,” Green Car Reports reports.

I’ll be honest with you: I’m not really expecting a sub-$30,000 mass-market product to arrive so quickly from Honda. Then again, it is the maker of the Honda Civic and the Honda CR-V. Maybe it’s just been waiting for the time to be right.
